PET PASSPORTS IN SPAIN

Travelling with your pets has never been easier. Six month quarantines are no longer required instead you can use a pet passport to travel with your pet between Spain and the United Kingdom. Paying for quarantine costs well in excess of £1000 per pet so it is best to be well prepared way in advance. This is especially true if you are planning to leave Spain and move back to the United Kingdom. Pet passports are required for cats, dogs and ferrets.

What is very important to note that all pets have to be chipped. If you have been given a pet that has been chipped in somebody elses name it will make proceedings very difficult. For example if someone has passed away you will be required to present their death certificate as proof of ownership. T o make things even more difficult the proceedings differ from province to province.

Your pets will need a rabies jab that is current and a blood test will have to be taken six months before departure. The blood test itself is pricey and can cost €100 per pet. In extremely young pets the blood test can prove to have too few antibodies and then your pet will be required to retake the blood test. Your vet will let you know within three weeks of having taken the test if your pet has failed. It is very important to note that your pet cannot travel until six months after the blood test.

As there are many people leaving Spain at the moment to return to the U.K. permanently it is very important to have these tests done well before your departure. If your pet is in need of any other jabs these will be administered on your first visit. If your pet hasn’t been to the pet regularly it can take as much as eight months to be ready for your pet to return to the United Kingdom.

Your animals will also need a certificate to ensure that they are parasite free 24-48 hours before departure. If you are in the Javea area the Clinica Veterenaria Arenal does come highly recommended due to their efficiency and friendliness. Telephone 965 794 560
