WORKING IN LANZAROTE AND JOB VACANCIES IN LANZAROTE

if you are considering moving to Spain and looking for jobs in Spain then why not consider the Spanish Canary Island of Lanzarote?

In terms of size it is the fourth largest of the Canary Islands and the easternmost only 80 miles (125km) off the coast of Africa!

lanzarote

It may not be the biggest of the islands but it is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the Canaries. Lanzarote is unique and known for stark volcanic landscape which has a beauty of its own.

High rise development of the resorts has been prevented unlike other mass tourism destinations such as Benidorm and Torremolinos in other areas of Spain.

Principally though, the climate and weather in Lanzarote is the real reason for its popularity as a tourist destination. Its proximity to Africa means it is far more south than the popular Costa del Sol coast of Spain and because of this temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year even in wintertime.

The average annual temperature is 21°C. Therefore if you are considering living and working in Lanzarote you will benefit from a better climate than any other part Spain.

So are the downsides towards looking for work and jobs in Lanzarote?

The short answer is yes! Because it is an island, there is a feeling of what is known to locals as 'island fever' where sometimes you feel trapped and wanting to get off the island. After all it is still quite a small place and you need to question whether you could live and settle in this environment.

Most of the jobs advice on this page is aimed towards jobs in Lanzarote for English-speaking people. This is because many of our readers are English, British, Germans or Americans who have a limited ability to speak Spanish and therefore are looking for English-speaking jobs in Lanzarote.

Perhaps the best place to start to look for work would be the islands capital of Arrecife which is located on the island's southern coast. This pretty port has plenty of restaurants and shops with job opportunities.

The modern resort of Costa Teguise is situated to the west of Arrecife and is very popular with windsurfers.

Puerto del Carmen, is the busiest resort in Lanzarote and this situated about 10 miles west of Arrecife. This would be a very lively place to live and work. The two-mile beach is lined with bars, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs.

Just along the coast you will find two smaller resorts with fewer work opportunities of course, these are Playa de los Pocillos and Matagorda.

Finally we must mention the lovely resort of Playa Blanca the gorgeous beaches and stunning views of the neighbouring Canary Island of Fuerteventura.

BAR JOBS IN LANZAROTE - HOTEL JOBS IN LANZAROTE

Lanzarote being a popular tourist destination has many job openings and vacancies in the catering related trades such as cooks, waiters, dishwashers, bar tenders, cleaners, animators, dancers etc.

Many people come to Lanzarote for the summer season looking for seasonal bar jobs in Lanzarote and you will usually get a summer job in Lanzarote fairly easily. Look for resorts such as Arrecife (the capital), Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.

Without doubt if you are looking for a job in Lanzarote or Lanzarote jobs, then bar work and bar jobs are the most common type of job available.

There are also plenty of other jobs in the tourist sector notably hotel jobs in Lanzarote such as holiday reps, cleaners, receptionists etc.

SUMMER JOBS IN LANZAROTE 2012

There are also lots of opportunities for summer jobs in Lanzarote. It is however important to know that if you do choose to work in the tourist industry that the work is seasonal mainly from March until October and that the wages paid are about 60% of what is earned by your Northern European counterparts, although the cost of living is 90% of that of Northern Europe.

A limited knowledge of the Spanish language is ideal but not compulsory, making these kind of jobs fiercely competitive between all nationalities across the board.

Very popular on the job scale in this field are cleaning jobs in Lanzarote as they are well paid, in abundance and all year round as people's homes as well as villa companies require cleaners.

Work in the tourist industry is mainly done in shifts or split shifts. On the positive side you can spend your time off at the beaches of Lanzarote but this type of work is really no good if you have a young family to support as the hours are long.

For the best chance of summer jobs in Lanzarote these are the best-known holiday resorts: Arrecife the capital, Costa Teguise, Matagorda, Playa Blanca, Playa De Los Pocillos, Puerto Calero and Puerto Del Carmen.

HOLIDAY REP JOBS LANZAROTE

Instead of arriving in Lanzarote and then looking for a job, why not consider searching for a job in advance by applying to work as a holiday rep in Lanzarote.

Many visitors and tourists to this popular island arrive on what are known as package holidays. Instead of organising their holiday themselves they book with a major tour operator who organise everything for them including their flights airport transfers and hotel accommodation.

The tour operator then arrange to have a holiday rep on hand to deal with any questions or problems that might occur during their stay in Lanzarote.

Becoming a holiday rep in Lanzarote is very straightforward, you can apply to the major companies such as Thompsons. We certainly suggest that you are full of energy and reliability and are most likely in your 20s or 30s. This is most likely to get you the job. With the job as a rep you get to see the island and get paid at the same time, as well as having the job security of a major company who are guaranteed to pay your wages at a fairly decent rate and provide your accommodation included in the package.

HOW TO FIND WORK IN LANZAROTE AND WHERE TO FIND LANZAROTE JOBS

Jobs in Lanzarote can be found by the usual means of internet, radio, newspaper, word of mouth etc. There is a lot of competition for jobs in Lanzarote so it is important that you apply for a job with a contract. For job adverts try the classified section in the Lanzarote Canarias 7 Newspaper.

lanzarote-viewsThese kind of jobs will entitle you to the Spanish state pension, a limited unemployment benefit and of course access to medical care via the Spanish national health service.

As your new employer will also be paying his fair share of these contributions he will make sure he employs the best candidate for the job.

Of course there are many other Lanzarote jobs just like anywhere else such as lawyer, doctor, teacher, nurse, policemen, pharmacist and shop assistants etc.

Working hours differ greatly from Northern Europe due to the extreme heat. A typical Spanish working day starts at ten in the morning until one and then everyone has a siesta. Work resumes at four in the afternoon until around eight in the evening. Most of these jobs require a good working knowledge of the Spanish language.

STARTING A BUSINESS IN LANZAROTE OR BUYING A BUSINESS IN LANZAROTE

Alternatively of course if you don’t fancy working for someone in Lanzarote there is always the possibility of going the self-employed route, by setting up your own business in Lanzarote. It is important to take note that you will need to pay at least 250 Euros monthly in compulsory social security contributions as well as VAT or IVA which is due from the first Euro and on every Euro you earn.

IVA is currently 18% so you have to come to Spain with good starting capital to be able to make a go of it. Alternatively of course you can always buy an already established business in Lanzarote which can be easier on your nerves and wallet in the long run.

Many jobs in Lanzarote that are really popular with English people are in the real estate sector. Second to the tourist industry jobs, jobs in the construction industry have been the driving force in the Spanish economy over the last decade and of course there are many real estate agencies in Lanzarote selling houses, apartments, villas, fincas, guest houses, hotels etc.

There are almost as many real estate offices in Lanzarote as there are bars and restaurants. Of course branching off real estate are the tradesmen associated with housing such as plumbers, electricians, plasterers, tillers, painters etc. These jobs are probably amongst the most highest possible earnings and best paying jobs in Lanzarote.
