Santa Eulalia (known locally as Sant Eularia des Riu) is the third largest town on Ibiza. The resort is situated on the east coast, around 10 miles (16km) northeast of the capital, Ibiza Town. It is mainly popular with couples and families. SANTA EULALIA BEACHESSanta Eulalia has two town beaches, both of which have gently sloping sands making them ideal for children. The main beach, Platja Santa Eularia des Riu, is around 300 metres long and is backed by a promenade lined with apartment blocks, hotels and restaurants. To the east of this beach is the Port Espiritu marina. There are boat trips from here to Ibiza Town during the summer months. At the heart of Santa Eulalia is the Placa d'Espanya, dominated by the late 18th century town hall. Just below the square is the pedestrianised thoroughfare, Passeig de s'Alamera, which hosts a colourful market during summer evenings. Many of the town's top restaurants are located along the Carrer de Sant Vincent, including the Sandy's bistro, notable for its fine Spanish and French dishes. There are more excellent eateries in the marina, with Dona Margarita Puerto and El Corsario Negro being particular favourites. SANTA EULALIA HISTORYOn the western side of the town is a small hill, Puig de Missa, dominated by a fine fortress-like church which dates back to the late 16th century. About halfway up the hill is the Museum of Ethnology, which examines the island's rural past. Exhibits include old musical instruments, carpentry tools, fishing spears, wine-making equipment and items of clothing. Punta Arabi is a wooded promontory situated around 3 miles north-east of the town. The huge hippy market, which usually has over 400 stalls, is held near here every Wednesday. There is a huge range of items for sale, including antiques, clothing, cheap jewelry and bric-a-brac. A short distance from Punta Arabi is the small resort of Es Canar, which boasts a fine Blue Flag beach. The exposed beach at Cala Nova, a little to the north of Es Canar, is notable for its vigorous waves, especially when a northerly wind blows across the island. There are often boat trips from Santa Eulalia's marina to some of the more remote beaches. The pretty village of Santa Carles, about 4 miles (7km) northeast of Santa Eulalia, was a popular destination among hippies in the 1960's. Their favourite hangout during that time, Anita's Bar, is still going strong, although the nearby Las Dalias bar is very popular. Sant Carles also boasts a fine 18th century church. SANTA EULALIA NIGHTLIFEBy Ibiza's standards, Santa Eulalia is pretty tame when it comes to nightlife. Cafe Guarana in the marina is the nearest thing to a nightclub, although there are several easy-going music bars along the seafront. If you are looking for something a bit livelier, it's better to head into nearby Ibiza Town. Santa Eulalia has a new bus station on the Cami de Missa. There are regular buses from here to Ibiza Town and an occasional service to San Antonio. The main tourist office is situated on calle Maria Riquer.
