CARTAGENA LOCATION

Cartagena is located in the province of Murcia in Spain on the Costa Calida and is a town with a port and naval base. Cartagena is second to Murcia in terms of size and population, and dates back to the Carthaginian times hence the name. Cartagena was of great importance owing to its location as a busy sea port.

Today Cartagena is important as it is the capital of Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department of the Mediterranean and has been since the time of the Spanish Bourbons dating back to the 18th century.

Today visitors to Cartagena can admire many landmarks which include the Roman Theatre of Cartago and more modern buildings such as Cartagena’s City Hall. Cartagena also has its fair share of beaches which include the Cala Cortina, Islas Menores, the Playa Honda Beach, Mar de Cristal, Cala del Pino, Cavanna Beach, Barco Perdido Beach, El Galúa Beach, Levante Beach and La Gola Beach.

The nearest towns and cities to Cartagena include Mazarron and Aguilas in the south and to the north one will find the seas side resorts of the Mar Menor and Southern Costa Blanca. The nearest airport is the Murcia Airport which is situated on the shores of the Mar Menor.
